History of Kandaketiya Divisional Secretariat

Kandaketiya Divisional Secretariat Office is situated in Badulla which is belonged to the province of Uva. There are twenty-six (26) Gramaniladhari divisions which were established by considering the density of population. The population of this division is about 27515. This division has people of different ethnic origins who observe different religions and who speak different Languages. Therefore, it can be known as a multi ethnic division.

Although they belong to different kinds of religions and nationalities it never effects for the bondage among them. These innocent people live here together as one nation. The majority is represented by the Buddhist. If we pay attention on the sacred places, there are twenty one temples, two mosques and two kovils were existed in this division from the  past .Most of the priests take a good effort to improve the spirituality and the thoughts of the people in an attractive manner by contributing through their service.

When we find about the history of this division, Hon: D.S. Senanayake who was an independence activist who served as the prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 1948 to 1952 could be mentioned as a great hero. He entered politics at the age of thirty eight and in 1931 become Minister of Agriculture and lands. Badulu oya and Bathmedilla projects were begun during of that time. He combated Sri Lanka’s agricultural problems. This earned him respected and he continued to be a Minister for fifteen years.

The environment, which Kandaketiya Secretariat office is situated is contained with so many natural resources. Among  them Badulu oya takes a prominent place, which contributes by providing water in numerous ways for the day to day life and for cultivations. It forms naturally in the hill region and flow down. Mostly Maize and chillies are cultivated by the farmers.

There are twenty- one schools were established in this division. According to the total no of schools, seventeen schools are established for Sinhala medium students. The students who study in these Schools face for so many difficulties due to the lack of teachers and the other facilities.   

Although, Kandaketiya is placed in a far away from the city, Kandaketiya Divisional Secretariat office combines with the people in direct and indirect ways to increase the condition of the lives of these people, and to solve their problems and to bring them into the proper way in a better manner.
